I’ve mentioned in a previous post that my shoulders were injured during my judo days. Well, my left shoulder started acting up again, and so I haven’t been working out at the gym for 2 weeks now. In the first few days I couldn’t raise my left arm sideways. My friend, who’s a physical therapist, told me I have an impinged shoulder.

So for the past couple of weeks all I’ve been doing are crunches in my room, some walking, and swimming. The breast stroke is perfect for me (it was my favorite style anyway) because it involves no lateral movements of the arms. And swimming is one superb cardiac and aerobic exercise. But, as my coach said back in college, you’ll have to swim continuously for at least 20 minutes for it to have any real effect.

Somebody at DavaoSale.com (where I advertise my blogs ;) ) asked me how I do my crunches. I promise to come up with some form of instructional material on this. But I want to run it by my PT friend first — he’s also a certified Pilates instructor.

As for my impinged shoulder, I suppose I’ll have to go through therapy for it before I can resume my upper-body weights training. Or, maybe I can still do upper-body weights as long as there are no lateral arm raises….

Beware it might be more than an “impingement syndrome” thing. It’s kinda not common your age to get this type of shoulder injury. Rotator Cuff tears or partial muscle tears are often labeled as “impingement”, and the two entities have different forms of management…
