Tips on setting weight-loss goals
It is extremely important to set goals when it comes to losing weight and getting in shape. Though many are aware of the importance of setting goals, what can become a problem is when the goals that are set are unrealistic. Careful attention should be placed upon the goals that you set and to make certain that they can be completed in a timely manner and realistic fashion.
Many people are bombarded with images that flash across their television screens or computer monitors — 24 hours a day — that promise quick weight loss. There is no mention of hard work or determination, and if it took a year or so to see results that lasted in lifelong success, the commercial would not air. However, if you are seeking lifelong results, then you need a life long approach to weight loss and fitness, not false hopes that overnight you would lose 50-100 pounds and dramatically change the shape of your body. Unrealistic weight loss goals do one thing only: sell products and produce false expectations. If you want to change your body, lose weight, and keep it off, you need to start slowly, make lifestyle changes, and add more activity to your lifestyle.
Everyone will be faced with choices of eating foods that are high in calories, have too many carbs, or are drenched in fat. And like most people, you will eventually give in. If it isn’t the emotional stress of life that causes you to falter, it will undoubtedly be the next family reunion or holiday. Unrealistic goals place unnecessary burden and stress that caus people to make poor choices through low self-esteem, feeling like a failure, adding more stress, and giving up.
Realizing that there are times in life where you will eat more than you intended to, and developing a strategy that helps you either burn those calories through exercise, or cutting back on calories after periods of overeating can help you put your weight loss goals in perspective. When someone tries to adhere to an unrealistic weight loss plan, and then fails to keep all of its stringent adherents, they can become depressed and overindulge. Balance is key to every successful weight-loss plan, and realistic goals and expectations are vital. By taking a careful approach to your weight-loss strategy, and ensuring that your goals are realistic, you can avoid many of the pitfalls that have caused many to give up.
